  • Résumé: "Inside-Outside is an honest account of Richard Price's life as an anthropologist, historian, art historian, and Caribbeanist. In addition to narrating his experiences with the Saaramaka in Surinam and maroons in Guyane, this memoir also details Price's encounters with the likes of Claude Lévi-Strauss and Sidney Mintz. By detailing his life from his time as a precocious high school student visiting Navajo and Hopi homelands to his flight from authorities in Suriname to receiving the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Minister of Culture, Price guides readers through hallowed halls and jungle paths to illuminate the truths of a unique life. These same adventures also allow readers to look over Price's shoulders-and those of his wife and research partner, Sally Price-and through his field notes as he researched and wrote some of the most important books of the twentieth century. Furthermore, having held positions at Yale, Johns Hopkins, and William & Mary while also surviving as an unaffiliated scholar for a number of years, Price offers serious reflections on the inner workings of academic life during the past half-century. His experiences inside (and outside) the ivory tower offer a perch to examine the constantly changing worlds of academics and maroons alike."
