  • Résumé: Sir Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973) is widely considered the most influential British anthropologist of the twentieth century, known to generations of students for his seminal works on South Sudanese ethnography Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic Among the Azande (OUP 1937) and The Nuer (OUP 1940). In these works, now classics in the anthropological literature, Evans-Pritchard broke new ground on questions of rationality, social accountability, kinship, social and political organization, and religion, as well as influentially moving the discipline in Britain away from the natural sciences and towards history. Yet despite much discussion about his theoretical contributions to anthropology, no study has yet explored his fieldwork in detail in order to get a better understanding of its historical contexts, local circumstances or the social encounters out of which it emerged. This book then is just such an exploration, of Evans-Pritchard the fieldworker through the lens of his fieldwork photography. Through an engagement with his photographic archive, and by thinking with it alongside his written ethnographies and other unpublished evidence, the book offers a new insight into the way in which Evans-Pritchard's theoretical contributions to the discipline were shaped by his fieldwork and the numerous local people in Africa with whom he collaborated. By writing history through field photographs we move back towards the fieldwork experiences, exploring the vivid traces, lived realities and local presences at the heart of the social encounter that formed the basis of Evans-Pritchard's anthropology.
    Sir Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973) est largement considéré comme l'anthropologue britannique le plus influent du XXe siècle, connu de générations d'étudiants pour ses travaux fondateurs sur l'ethnographie sud-soudanaise : Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic Among the Azande (OUP 1937) et The Nuer (OUP 1940). Dans ces ouvrages, devenus des classiques de la littérature anthropologique, Evans-Pritchard a ouvert de nouvelles perspectives sur les questions de rationalité, de responsabilité sociale, de parenté, d'organisation sociale et politique et de religion, et a contribué à éloigner la discipline des sciences naturelles pour la rapprocher de l'histoire. Pourtant, malgré les nombreuses discussions sur ses contributions théoriques à l'anthropologie, aucune étude n'a encore exploré en détail son travail de terrain afin de mieux comprendre les contextes historiques, les circonstances locales ou les rencontres sociales dont est issu son travail. Ce livre est donc une exploration d'Evans-Pritchard le travailleur de terrain à travers l'objectif de sa photographie de terrain. En s'intéressant à ses archives photographiques et en les confrontant à ses écrits ethnographiques et autres témoignages inédits, le livre offre un nouvel aperçu de la manière dont les contributions théoriques d'Evans-Pritchard à la discipline ont été façonnées par son travail sur le terrain et par les nombreuses personnes rencontrées en Afrique avec lesquelles il a collaboré. En décrivant ce parcours professionnel à travers des photographies de terrain, nous revenons vers les expériences de terrain, en explorant les traces vivantes, les réalités vécues et les autochtones au cœur de la rencontre sociale qui a constitué la base de l'anthropologie d'Evans-Pritchard.
