  • Résumé: Among the Javano-Balinese dance dramas of the court, Gambuh is the oldest of the still existing genres. It has its origins in the 15th century and uses for its plot stories from the great epic of Prince Panji. Supporting a good troup of Gambuh players involves considerable financial means and extremely laborious rehearsing. For these reasons and because of the lack of popularity of Gambuh with the great majority, performances have become rare after the decline of the courts. The orchestra is distinctly different from the usual types of gamelan since the metallophones as the leaders of the melody are absent and the sound of flutes and of tinkling and ringing instruments prevails. The list of actors contains kings, clowns, knights, ministers, heralds, a princess, and a governess. A performance normally lasts for 2 to 4 hours today. The film presents a shortened versions of ca. 20 minutes.
