The reports of Chavonnes and his council were made in response to a request of the Council of seventeen of the Dutch East India company, contained in a letter dated June 24, 1716; the report of Van Imhoff, newly appointed governor general of the East Indies, was made in 1743 to Governor Swellengrebel for his instruction as to the conduct of the company's affairs at the Cape
