Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : making a mortar for herbs : A block of wood about 30 cm long is cut with an axe out of a tree trunk. Measurements with compasses are taken at the upper cutting surface. The block is then hollowed out with a gouge, and its outer surface and handle are fashioned with a cutting knife.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : carrying water : The carrying of water in four different containers: a) a vessel made of bamboo, b) a wooden tub, c) a kerosene canister, d) zink pails on a frame. In addition a wooden carrying frame, clotheswashing in the river, and cleaning of the body are shown.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : carving a crossbow : A piece of wood is chopped from a tree-stump with an axe and cut with the cutting knife to a cross-bow shaft. The position of the bow is chiselled out. The bamboo bow is whittled, tried several times in the shaft, and then wedged firmly in position. After notch, groove, and trigger have been positioned on the shaft, the bow is strung with twisted hemp fibres. After the elasticity test, arrows are whittled and trial shots carried out.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : harvesting opium : The poppy heads are cut open with a three-edged knife. A milky juice comes out of the incisions. The thickened milky juice which while thickening changed its colour to blackish-brown is collected with a scraper from the heads which were cut the day before. It is then wrapped up in a flower petal.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : smoking opium : An opium smoker prepares a place where he can recline, spreads out his smoking materials, cleans the bowl of the pipe, kneads a drop of opium, puts it into his pipe, lights it at the oil flame, and inhales the smoke.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : separating maize grains from the cobs and grinding : A bone bodkin is used to slit open maize-cobs, the spathes are taken off with the hand, and the grains are separated from the cob with a special tool. Finally the maize grains are grinding in a hand mill.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : saddling a pack horse : The pack-saddle is laid on the animal''s croup and secured by means of girth and crupper. Two wicker baskets are then tied to the carrying frame on the ground; frame and baskets are finally lifted on to the saddle.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : making incense rods : Pieces of bark from the incense tree, dried on the roof, are filled into a basket, carried to a wooden tread mortar, and pounded, Then it is fed through a wire sieve onto a woven winnow. Finally, the fine, flourlike dust is poured over long rods, which had been dipped beforehand in a sticky resin solution. This is repeated until the joss sticks have reached the required thickness.
Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : carrying children in a scarf on the back : First a small child, and then a baby, are secured in a carrying device of batik-coloured cotton cloth on the back of their mother and both are carried.
